Lionel Messi continued his scoring streak but Barcelona was held to a 1-1 tie in Valencia Sunday.

Barcelona (59 points) maintained its lead in La Liga, but struggled as Valencia got off to a strong start and came close to breaking the tie late. Barcelona has won only once in its last three league games (1-1-1) and was held to a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals Wednesday.

Messi scored in his 12th consecutive game, extending his league record.

Ever Banega capitalized on a poor clearance, firing a shot unmarked from 15 yards in the 33rd minute. After Joao Pereira took down Pedro in the penalty area, Messi tied the score in the 39th minute. Messi shot off the outside of the left post early in the second half. But Valencia had several chances to go ahead in the second half, Roberto Soldado heading wide, the firing off-target from difficult angles on the right.

Then, in the final minutes Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes made a double save to preserve the result.
