Real Madrid tied with Valencia 1-1 but managed to moved on to the Semifinals of Copa del Rey.
It was a 1-1 draw for the third and final match between Valencia and Real Madrid in slightly over a week, but the previous 2-0 result in favor of the white team from Madrid, qualified them to the semifinal round of Copa del Rey.
After a shot slightly off target by Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2nd minute of play, the playing field leveled off with the game going back and forth between the two turfs. Neither team seemed to be able to score, and Real Madrid was leaning more towards the defensive side, relying on the opportunities it had to play to the counter attack.
Before the first fifteen minutes of play were through, Iker Casillas suffered a strain on his left hand and had to be taken off and replaced with Adan. Cristiano Ronaldo continued on as team Captain.
The first goal for the 'merengues' came before the end of the first half, with Xabi Alonso creating a magnificent play that ended in Karim Benzema opening the score. A few minutes later Fabio Coentrao was booked with his first yellow card before the whistle went off to indicate the end of the first 45 minutes of play.
A couple of minutes into the second half, Coentrao received his second yellow card and was sent off leaving the visiting team with ten men, and giving Valencia a free shot that Tino Costa converted into the tying goal at 52 minutes of play.
Both teams continued to push forward unsuccessfully and in the 75th minute, Jose Mourinho opted for a tactical change that brought in Luka Modric for Karim Benzema, putting Real Madrid on a more defensive edge.
The game turned into somewhat of a battlefield with a desperate Valencia looking to score and Madrid displaying extreme defensive skills. This resulted in a grand total of 9 yellow cards split almost evenly between the teams and including bookings for Cristiano Ronaldo, Nacho, Luka Modric, and an unusual one for Xabi Alonso. It also had 2 red cards that left Madrid with 9 players after Angel Di Maria was also sent off right before the end of the match.
Real Madrid advances to the semifinals and will face the winner between Malaga and FC Barcelona.
