Jerry Bengtson scored into an empty net in the 80th minute to give Honduras a 2-1 win over the U.S . in the opening match of the Hexagonal round of World Cup qualifying in San Pedro Sula Wednesday.

The U.S. took the lead in the opening half on a Clint Dempsey goal. But the Catrachos rallied for a halftime tie, then capitalized on a lack of organization by the U.S. midfield and back line.

Dempsey volleyed in a Jermaine Jones pass in the 36th minute. But the U.S . failed to take advantage of having momentum.

Three Honduran defenders were involved in the tying goal, a Juan Carlos Garcia bicycle kick in the 40th minute, following the U.S. failure to clear a corner kick. Victor Bernardez collected the corner, crossing to Maynor Figueroa , who chested toward Garcia just outside the penalty spot.

On the tie-breaking goal,  Oscar Boniek Garcia ran onto a ball in the penalty area, past defender Geoff Cameron and ahead of goalkeeper Tim Howard, centering the pass. Bengtson, who plays for the New England Revolution in MLS , beat Omar Gonzalez to poke the shot in.

The midday start in heat and humidity appeared to affect the U.S., which made three substitutions by the 66th minute. The U.S. had won three previous World Cup qualifiers in San Pedro Sula , in 1965, 2001 and 2009.
