Atletico Madrid generated enough offense to set the first-half tone, then held on for a 2-0 victory over Real Zaragoza Sunday.

Tiago Cardoso's glancing header off a corner gave Atletico the lead in the 31st minute. Radamel Falcao's penalty kick past goalkeeper Roberto made it a two-goal advatage in the 38th minute. Arda Turan earned the penalty after being taken down by  Cristian Sapunaru in the 37th minute.

Atletico (44 points) moved within eight points of La Liga-leader Barcelona , which was visiting Malaga Sunday. Atletico's goals-against total of 18 is second in La Liga.
